For properties that experience repeated graffiti vandalism, anti-graffiti coatings are a cost-effective investment that reduces removal cost and difficulty for every future incident. Understanding the two main coating systems — sacrificial and permanent — helps property owners choose the right protection for their situation.

Sacrificial Coatings

Sacrificial coatings are wax-based or polymer-based coatings applied to the surface that act as a barrier between the surface and graffiti media. When graffiti is applied over a sacrificial coating, it bonds to the coating rather than the underlying surface. Removal is accomplished by removing the coating — along with the graffiti — using hot water pressure washing.

After removal, the sacrificial coating must be reapplied. This makes sacrificial coatings appropriate for surfaces that experience infrequent graffiti incidents — the coating is "sacrificed" with each removal and reapplication event.

Sacrificial coatings are particularly effective on historic masonry and brick surfaces where the underlying surface is too fragile or too valuable to risk with aggressive removal chemistry.

Permanent (Non-Sacrificial) Coatings

Permanent anti-graffiti coatings are polyurethane or epoxy-based coatings that create a non-porous surface that graffiti cannot penetrate. Graffiti applied over a permanent coating sits on the surface rather than bonding to it — and can be removed with professional graffiti remover without damaging the coating.

Permanent coatings do not need to be reapplied after each removal event, making them more cost-effective for surfaces that experience frequent graffiti incidents. They are appropriate for metal surfaces, concrete, and masonry in high-vandalism locations.
