Post-construction exterior cleaning is a critical path item for project closeout — delays in cleaning can delay final inspections, certificate of occupancy, and tenant move-in. Planning the cleaning timeline early and building it into the project schedule prevents last-minute scrambles that compromise quality and increase cost.

When to Schedule Each Phase

The rough clean should be scheduled 2–3 weeks before the pre-finish clean is needed. This allows time for the rough clean to be completed, for any remaining construction activity to conclude, and for the pre-finish clean to be scheduled with adequate lead time.

The pre-finish clean should be scheduled 1–2 weeks before final inspections. This allows time for the pre-finish clean to be completed, for any punch list items identified during the clean to be addressed, and for the final turnover clean to be scheduled.

The final turnover clean should be scheduled 2–3 days before occupancy. This minimizes the window between the final clean and occupancy — reducing the risk of re-contamination from late construction activity.

Coordinating with the Construction Schedule

Exterior cleaning contractors need adequate notice to mobilize equipment and crew for post-construction cleaning. For large projects, 2–3 weeks of advance notice is appropriate. For smaller projects, 1 week is typically sufficient.

Establish a relationship with your exterior cleaning contractor early in the project — before you need them. This ensures they are familiar with the project, have the right equipment for the surface types involved, and can respond quickly when the schedule requires it.
